Surviving (and Enjoying!) Your Family Photo Adventure with Young Children in Madison, Wi

As a Madison, WI family photographer and mom of three, I've seen it all! Here's my real-talk guide to making your photo adventure with little ones actually enjoyable.

Let's Be Real About Family Photo Adventures

Can we just take a second to acknowledge that getting your kids photo-ready feels like running a marathon sometimes? As both a family photographer AND a mom of three wild ones, I totally get the stress that comes before your photo adventure. The word "session" makes kids think they have to sit still and smile on command (boring!), but when we call it a "photo adventure" or simply an adventure suddenly it becomes something fun to look forward to! You've invested in these photos, you want everyone to look perfect, and then your toddler decides that's the exact moment to have a meltdown about their socks feeling "weird."

I'm here to tell you: it's all going to be okay! Some of the most beautiful, authentic family photos I've captured in parks around Madison have happened in the midst of what parents thought was absolute chaos. Trust me, I've got your back, and together we'll make magic happen.

My Top Sanity-Saving Tips for Family Photos with Little Kids

1. Make Sure Kids Are Well-Rested and Fed

As photographers, we LOVE that golden hour light at Vilas Park or Olbrich Gardens. But you know what's not golden? A hangry or exhausted kiddo! I always recommend planning your "Photo Adventure" (because let's be honest, "photo session" sounds boring to kids!) for when your little ones are at their best - well-rested and with full bellies. If your toddler needs that afternoon nap, let's schedule our adventure afterward when they're refreshed. A happy, energized kid beats the perfect sunset lighting every single time.

2. Snacks Are Your Secret Weapon

Listen, I've bribed my own children with snacks more times than I can count. Pack a small arsenal of non-messy snacks (think cheerios, not chocolate or bright colored fruit snacks). Pro Madison mom tip: Those little snack containers are perfect for discreetly offering motivation during our session in Dane County.

3. Bring the Comfort Item (Yes, Even in Photos)

Does your little one have a ratty blanket or stuffed animal they can't live without? Bring it! Sometimes having that comfort item nearby helps them feel secure, and we can always take a few photos with it and a few without. I've photographed many families with a well-loved bunny or blankie making a cameo appearance.

4. Let Go of "Perfect" Poses

The most frame-worthy photos often come from genuine moments. If your toddler wants to run through Tenney Park instead of sitting prettily, let's capture that joy! If your baby is more interested in eating grass at the UW Arboretum than smiling at the camera, those concentrated little faces make for heartwarming images you'll treasure.

5. Prepare Older Siblings

If you have older kids, let them in on the importance of the photos. In my experience, making them aware of how much this means to you truly helps.

6. Plan a Post-Photo Reward

Having something fun planned after your session gives everyone something to look forward to. "After photos, we'll get ice cream at the Memorial Union Terrace!" works wonders for cooperation. The best part? The Madison area has so many great post-photo rewards, from Michael's Frozen Custard to splash pads in summer.

What to Bring to Your Madison, WI Family Photo Session

  • A small bag with wipes (for sticky hands and surprise runny noses)

  • Non-messy snacks and water

  • A small, engaging toy (something that fits in your pocket)

  • Change of clothes for any potty-training little ones

  • Your sense of humor!

What to Wear for Family Photos in Madison's Changing Seasons

Madison weather can be unpredictable, am I right? For spring sessions at the UW Arboretum, layers are your best friend. Summer sessions at Olbrich Gardens might call for light, breathable fabrics. Fall family photos at Pope Farm Conservancy pop with rich autumn colors. And for those brave enough for winter sessions, coordinating scarves and hats not only look adorable but keep everyone comfortable.

Remember: The Chaos Creates the Magic

Some of my all-time favorite photos of my own kids are the ones where things weren't going according to plan. The slightly tearful face, the candid belly laugh, the serious concentration—these are the moments that truly capture who your little ones are right now.

As your Madison, WI family photographer, I promise to roll with whatever mood your kids bring to our session. We'll play games, take breaks when needed, and create beautiful images that reflect your family's genuine connection.
